What is broken turnaround?
Broken turnaround is the penalty payable when the gap between wrap and your next call time is shorter than the minimum rest period set by your agreement. Under BECTU agreements, this minimum is 11 hours for both HETV drama and Feature Film crew.
It is not overtime. It is a separate penalty paid in addition to your standard day rate. And it applies regardless of how long you actually work on the second day.
When does it apply?
- HETV Drama: Less than 11 hours between wrap and next call
- Feature Film: Less than 11 hours between wrap and next call
- Applies regardless of the reason for the short gap (e.g. following a night shoot)
- Counted from actual wrap time, not scheduled wrap
- Travel time to/from location does not count toward the gap
How the penalty is calculated
The exact formula varies by agreement, but the principle is:
- For every hour (or part-hour) the gap is shorter than the minimum, you get a penalty
- Typically this is a fraction of your day rate
- On HETV, a full broken turnaround can equal your entire day rate again
The calculator above uses the standard BECTU HETV formula. If you are on a different agreement, the numbers may vary slightly. Always check your contract.
